    GEO explained in one paragraph

Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, is the practice of making your brand the source that AI models cite when they answer questions. It is not about ranking a page. It is about becoming the answer.

In traditional SEO, you optimise for Google, Bing and other search engines. In GEO, you optimise for the AI systems that synthesise answers: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews. These systems do not just index your pages. They read, summarise and quote them.

    Why it matters

If your brand is not in the training data or the live citations that AI models use, you are invisible in the fastest-growing search channel on the internet. And when you are invisible, your competitors become the default answer.

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is an extension of it. The brands that win will be the ones that build content and authority in ways that both humans and AI can trust.

    How to start

The foundation is the same as good SEO: clear content, strong technical structure, real authority and earned citations. But GEO adds a few extra layers:

    • Answer questions directly. AI models favour concise, well-structured answers.
    • Use schema and structured data so your content is machine-readable.
    • Build citations from trusted sources that AI models are known to reference.
    • Monitor how your brand appears in AI search results today.
GEO is not gaming the system. It is making sure the system can find the truth about you.

If you are already investing in SEO, you are part of the way there. The next step is to think about how your content exists as an answer, not just a page.
